Peach borersMales of the peachtree borer and lesser peachtree borer are closely-related and quite similar in appearance. These damaging pests of stone fruit trees and are very common and widespread, occur in the same locations and have periods of overlapping flight within each season. However, the composition of the sex pheromones of both species are different enough that traps baited with lures for either species usually do not capture males of the other species. Although males of each species show considerable variation in size, on average, the males of lesser peachtree borer are smaller (top left photo) than those of peachtree borer (top right photo). Note the number of moth scales that have accumulated on the trap liner in the bottom photo of peachtree borer males.
